Why a mobile-optimised website?

In under a year, Google has seen a 500% increase in commercially relevant search queries from mobile devices.

According to Morgan Stanley’s analysts, based on the current rate of change and adoption, the mobile web will be bigger than desktop internet use by 2015.

If your site was optimised for mobile devices, this would help users use your website more effectively.

The vast majority of websites contain too much content and even with the latest smartphones, viewing a website can take a lot longer then necessary and are a lot harder to navigate.

Every page needs to be easy to navigate to and optimised so users are not waiting a long time for the page to load. You only have a few seconds to grab their attention.

One of our favorite mobile websites is The Guardian. The site is extremely easy to use and is streamlined for mobile viewing, including reduced images sizes. You can tell that there has been considerable investment into mobile from The Guardian and this is one of the key reasons as to why they have so many site visits and interactions.

 

 

Mobile web stats

Mobile e-commerce is ramping up faster than online e-commerce, now making up 4% of total retail sales.

  • In 2010, around $2 billion was generated by eBay from mobiles
  • From June 2009 to July 2010, more than $1 billion of products were ordered from amazon.com using a mobile device

UK Mobile Stats

In September 2009, just 0.02% of all UK web traffic originated from a mobile device. In January 2011 this figure was a staggering 8.09% (representing a growth of over 4000%)!

iPhone traffic accounts for around 4.5% of all UK website traffic – not just mobile traffic!

  • iPhone traffic accounts for more than half of mobile traffic.
  • More people browsed UK websites in January 2011 from an iPad than from all Android powered devices put together. In fact, that’s been the case since September 2010, just over 3 months after the first iPad was launched in the UK.
  • In January 2011, Apple devices accounted for more than 70% of all mobile traffic in the UK.
  • If growth continues at the rate it did for the latter part of 2010, by June 2011, almost 15% of UK web traffic will be of mobile origin.
